We recently spotted Annie McNeely’s contemporary jewellery on Instagram so we get in touch to find out more about her designs and what inspired her to try some dipping!

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do?

I did a BA in silversmithing in jewellery at Sheffield Hallam uni in the early 90s but have only started creating jewellery myself in the last year or so having converted my garage into a workshop. I now work part time (4 days a week) and spend the rest of my time – as much as possible – making jewellery.

How did you discover Plasti Dip?

I make a lot of silver jewellery but I’ve always been interested in using unconventional materials and experimentation.  I came across Plasti Dip on eBay when I was looking for other plastic products and it looked interesting so I ordered a small pot of the yellow and ended up using it on the two brooches shown above and below.  I then ordered some green and red and recently made the green earrings shown here which were made as a commission.

I usually make one-off pieces and mainly do commissions but I’m starting to build up a bit more stock now as well.

What do you use Plasti Dip for?

I’ve been experimenting with dipping textured fabrics and I’m getting some really interesting results which I’ll develop into something wearable in due course.  I’m also currently working on a bangle which uses Corian as a base and I’ll dip part of that in some Plasti Dip to create a two-tone effect.

What is your favourite piece you’ve made so far with it?

I don’t have many finished pieces yet but so far I think the stripe brooch is my favourite. It’s really simple but it looks great on.  I still have a ton of things to try though so we’ll see!

What has the feedback been like from your customers?

Feedback has been good and people are interested in the Plasti Dip items because they’re different. I think other jewellers are quite interested because, like me, they’re often interested in new ways of working.

Where can we find you online and buy your jewellery?

I have an Etsy shop but I’ve only very recently set that up and there isn’t much on there yet. That can be found under BorntoAdornShop. Born to Adorn is my brand name.  I can also be messaged via instagram @Born_to_Adorn or emailed at annie@borntoadorn.co.uk.  My website is a work in progress but it’s on the way.
